Having seen only one humpback whale from the ship, we were looking forward to the opportunity to see a bit more marine life. The excursion company had encountered a pod of orca on their earlier tour so, the goal was to try to catch up to them. Apparently, they can move at pretty high speeds.
We travelled at a good speed for 45 - 60 minutes in the rain and wind. They provided rain slickers, hot beverages, and snacks, but it was still a rather cold and wet ride. We did spot a couple of bald eagles along the way.
And we did catch up to the pod of orcas.
When we returned to Ketchikan, we had a hot lunch, took a walk through the famous Creek Street and did some shopping before heading back to the ship.
It was very cool, as we were pretty much in the middle of the pod. They were popping up on all sides of the boat.
None of them came very close, though. And it was hard to capture a photo as you never knew when or where one would surface. Mona saw a playful one surface and roll over on its back! Once again, we were thankful for our binoculars.
